Dance duo Goldfish have set a new MTN Sama record by receiving eight nominations for their hit album Perceptions of Pacha.
Announced at a huge bash in Fourways, north of Joburg last night, their record nominations beat the previous record set by Freshlyground at last year’s Samas.
Freshlyground didn’t win all seven of their categories, but they did equal TKZee’s record-winning four Samas. So the question is whether Goldfish can beat the record set by Freshlyground and TKZee.
Goldfish face tough opposition in certain categories, particularly Best Duo or Group, where their competition comes from 340ml, Bala Brothers, Joyous Celebration and the Soweto Gospel Choir. They are also nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year and, of course, Best Dance Album, among others. Following closely on the tail of Goldfish were Lira and 340ml with six nominations apiece. While this was expected from Lira, who has been a household name for the past five years, 340ml’s nominations were the surprise of the evening.
Their fan base is considered underground, with their nomination in the Best Alternative Music: English as proof. Here they are up against the even lesser commercially known Jane Rademeyer, Max Normal TV, the New Academics and the Sick Leaves. However, they also qualified in Album of the Year, Best Duo/Group and Record of the Year – categories which are normally reserved for the bigger artists.
For instance, Album of the Year contenders include Chris Chameleon, Lira, Rhythmic Elements and, of course, Goldfish, all of which were big sellers and commercially successful in 2008.
